Netherlands Indies 1000 Gulden Note

This attractive Netherlands Indies 1000 Gulden note was issued by the Javasche Bank. This piece is particularly exceptional for its rarity as an issued and evenly circulated high-denomination note. Featuring Javanese dancers from Djokjakarta, this note is a member of the Wajang (Java dancers) series and is part an issue that strongly exemplifies the long-standing multicultural undertones of Javanese society with the inclusion of legal text in Dutch, Javanese, Chinese, and Arabic. The note’s large size, vivid color, and watermark of the goddess of Justice and Truth only add to this variety’s exotic aura and accentuate its value as a truly exceptional and rare banknote.

The Wajang series was issued from 1934 to 1939 and was named after the Wajang-Wong players, princes and princesses from the principalities of Solo (Soerakarta) and Djokjakarta, who spoke and performed wajang texts without using masks. The notes of this series were designed by well-known artist C.A. Lion Cachet who distinguished himself mainly as a designer of decorative art and design including furniture, batiks, upholstery fabrics and carpets. The notes had one signature combination and were printed by Joh. Enschedé & Zonen, Haarlem.
