Rare PMG-certified US Note Realizes $93,000 in Stack's Bowers Sale

A rare US banknote certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) sold for just shy of $100,000 at a Stack’s Bowers auction. The banknote was among several PMG-graded notes that exceeded their minimum estimates the during Stack’s Bowers Spring 2022 Auction – Session 7, which concluded April 7.

The top result was an 1890 $2 Treasury Note graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20148) that went for $93,000, exceeding its estimate. The note shows James McPherson, a highly regarded Union general who died in the Civil War. It is one of three examples of this catalog number to share the highest grade in the PMG Population Report.
