Several PMG-graded US Banknotes Expected to Achieve Six Figures in Heritage Sale

The Central States US Currency Signature Auction in May includes more than 1,000 PMG-certified notes.

Several rare US banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are expected to realize prices over $100,000 in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is currently underway in the Central States US Currency Signature Auction, which will be held May 4-7, 2022.

The top lot among more than 1,000 PMG-graded notes offered in the sale is an 1882 $1,000 Gold Certificate graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 20909), with an estimate of at least $375,000. Heritage Auctions believes this to be one of only two of this catalog number in private hands.

Also available in the sale is a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20944), with an estimate of at least $200,000. These are the highest denomination of Federal Reserve Notes ever printed, and they were mainly used in transactions between financial institutions.

Another top lot is a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20943), with an estimate of at least $200,000. It earned one of the highest grades of the 116 Small Size $5,000 Federal Reserve Notes listed in the PMG Population Report.

Other PMG-certified highlights in the auction include:

  • a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Dallas) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 21047), with an estimate of at least $175,000
  • an 1869 $50 Legal Tender graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 21001), with an estimate of at least $150,000
  • an 1880 $1,000 Legal Tender graded PMG 30 Very Fine NET (lot 20836), with an estimate of at least $150,000
  • a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Boston) graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 21048), with an estimate of at least $120,000
  • an 1865 $50 Interest Bearing Note graded PMG 20 Very Fine NET (lot 20838), with an estimate of at least $80,000
  • a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania $50 National Bank Note graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 21020), with an estimate of at least $50,000
  • a Cincinnati, Ohio $100 National Bank Note graded PMG 15 Choice Fine (lot 21023), with an estimate of at least $50,000
  • a Baltimore, Maryland 1875 $100 National Bank Note graded PMG 20 Very Fine NET (lot 21024), with an estimate of at least $50,000
  • a 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine EPQ★ (lot 20884), with an estimate of at least $40,000
  • a Havre de Grace, Maryland 1902 $50 National Bank Note graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 21032), with an estimate of at least $40,000
