Greek Auction Features Almost 400 PMG-certified World Banknotes

Almost 400 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in an upcoming Greek auction. More than half of the PMG-certified notes in the sale are from Greece. Online bidding is currently underway for A. Karamitsos’ Auction 694 Part A and Part B, which concludes June 11-12, 2022.
The top lot is a Greece, Ionian Bank Ltd. 1888-89 100 Drachmai graded PMG 12 Fine (Part A, lot 6472), with a starting price of €40,000 (about $42,000). The United Kingdom flag on the front of the note is a reminder of the bank’s origin in the Ionian Isles, which was a British protectorate before being transferred to Greek control in 1864.
Other PMG-certified highlights in the sale include:
- a Greece, German and Italian Occupation / World War II ND (1943) 5,000 Drachmai Front Proof graded PMG 61 Uncirculated NET (Part A, lot 6526), with a starting price of €3,000 (about $3,100)
- an Algeria 1942 5,000 Francs Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (Part B, lot 7184), with a starting price of €2,800 (about $2,900)
- a Greece, Bank of Greece 1923 1,000 Drachmai Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (Part A, lot 6450), with a starting price of €2,500 (about $2,600)
- a Greece, National Bank ND (1926) 500 Drachmai graded PMG 25 Very Fine (Part A, lot 6468), with a starting price of €2,500 (about $2,600)
- a Greece 1943 100,000 Drachmai Specimen graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (Part A, lot 6636), with a starting price of €2,500 (about $2,600)
- a Greece 1905 5 Drachmai Patriotic Loan graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (Part A, lot 6663), with a starting price of €2,500 (about $2,600)
- a Greece, Bank of Greece ND (1947) 10,000 Drachmai graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (Part A, lot 6559), with a starting price of €1,800 (about $1,900)
- an Estonia ND (1921) 500 Marka graded PMG 20 Very Fine NET (Part B, lot 7092), with a starting price of €1,800 (about $1,900)
- a Greece, Bank of Greece 1944 50,000,000 Drachmai Kalamata Treasury Note graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (Part A, lot 6645), with a starting price of €1,600 (about $1,700)
