World Bee Day is May 20, and this note celebrates the importance of pollinators.

What makes it special? May 20 is World Bee Day, which calls attention to the importance of pollinators to the ecosystem. The back of this banknote shows a bee at work, while the front of the note shows Carl Linnaeus, and 18th century Swedish botanist.

Did you know? Linnaeus developed a formal system of "binomial nomenclature," the Latin words used to identify animals by genus and species. Linnaeus named the European honeybee "Apis mellifera," meaning honey-bearing bee. After he learned bees bear nectar instead of honey, he tried to change the name to "Apis mellifica," meaning honey-making bee.
