PMG-certified $5,000 Federal Reserve Note Expected to Sell for Six Figures in World Banknote Auctions Sale

Posted on 2/3/2023

The $5,000 note from Dallas represents a rare opportunity for collectors, with only 28 known to exist.

A $5,000 Federal Reserve Note is at center stage in an auction of more than 200 US notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®). Bidding is already underway for the World Banknote Auctions US Currency Sale 1, being held on February 24, 2023.

Leading the sale is a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Dallas) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated (lot 1164), with an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. High-denomination notes like these were typically used for transactions between financial institutions, but they are physically the same size as the paper money in Americans’ wallets today. Only 28 $5,000 notes from Dallas are known to exist, according to the auction house. The PMG Population Report lists 19 examples of this note, with only five graded higher.
