What makes it special? This banknote is from the seventh series of South Africa notes, which were issued starting in 2018 to celebrate the life of anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became president of South Africa in 1994. The back of each denomination is devoted to a specific time period of his life: his birthplace of Mvezo is shown on the 10 Rand; his home in Soweto is on the 20 Rand; the site of his capture is on the 50 Rand; his place of imprisonment is on the 100 Rand; and his statue in Pretoria is on the 200 Rand.

Did you know? Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, so this year marks the 105th anniversary of his birth. The United Nations has recognized July 18 as Mandela Day, in which people are encouraged to work to transform the world.
