Hundreds of PMG-certified World Banknotes in Trigometric July Auction

A rare Malaya and British Borneo Specimen highlights the mid-July auction sessions.

Highlighting this auction is a Malaya and British Borneo 1961 10 Dollars Specimen graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (Session 2, lot 2232), with an estimate of RM50,000 to RM80,000 (about $11,000 to $17,000). While the PMG Population Report includes more than 5,200 examples of the issued version of this note (identified by its catalog number: Pick# 9a), there are only 8 Specimens listed. The Malaya and British Borneo Dollar was used by Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei until 1967, when each nation pursued their own individual currency.

Some of the PMG-certified banknotes in Session 1 of this auction include:

  • a China / People’s Republic 1949 20 Yuan graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 1588), with an estimate of RM7,000 to RM9,000 (about $1,500 to $1,900)
  • a China / People’s Republic 1949 100 Yuan graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 1593), with an estimate of RM6,800 to RM9,000 (about $1,400 to $1,900)
  • a China / People’s Republic 1949 500 Yuan graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 1600), with an estimate of RM5,600 to RM8,000 (about $1,200 to $1,700)
  • a China / People’s Republic 1948 5 Yuan graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 1582), with an estimate of RM4,000 to RM8,000 (about $850 to $1,700)
  • a China / People’s Republic 1949 1 Yuan graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 1585), with an estimate of RM3,600 to RM8,000 (about $760 to $1,700)

  • a Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1972-76) 100 Ringgit with a Solid-1 Serial Number graded PMG 20 Very Fine (lot 2077), with an estimate of RM30,000 to RM50,000 (about $6,400 to $11,000)
  • a Malaya & British Borneo 1961 10 Dollars graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 2231), with an estimate of RM36,000 to RM50,000 (about $7,600 to $11,000)
  • a Straits Settlements / British Administration 1935 5 Dollars graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 2164), with an estimate of RM24,000 to RM40,000 (about $5,000 to $8,500)
  • a Straits Settlements ND (1925-30) 5 Dollars Back Color Trial Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2165), with an estimate of RM20,000 to RM40,000 (about $4,200 to $8,500)
  • a pair of Malaysia, Bank Negara ND (1983-84) 10 Ringgits with Fancy Serial Numbers graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ and PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 2070), with an estimate of RM20,000 to RM30,000 (about $4,200 to $6,400)
