Note of the Month: Belize 20 Dollars

In August, we celebrate (?) International Bat Night, so let's hang out with this note that shows a neotropical fruit bat.

Varieties: The PMG Population Report also records Pick# 63b.

What makes it special? This note shows a neotropical fruit bat, whose 12 species live in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. These small bats lack tails and, like nearly all bats, are nocturnal. International Bat Night is held annually during the last full weekend of August to celebrate bats, who make up about a fifth of all mammal species.

Did you know? This note also shows several other unusual mammals, including a Baird's tapir (beneath the toucan), an anteater called a northern tamandua (to the right of the monkey) and the piglike collared peccary (below the monkey).

Total graded by PMG: As of mid-August 2024, the PMG Population Report includes 32 examples of Pick# 63a and 25 for Pick# 63b.

PMG median grade: PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ for Pick# 63a and PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ for Pick# 63b.

PMG highest graded: The PMG Population Report lists two examples of Pick# 63a in PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ.

Sales highlights: An example of Pick# 63a graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ realized $99 at a Heritage Auctions sale in 2012.

PMG Registry: This note is part of two Belize categories in the PMG Registry, including the most popular: 1974-Date, Issued Notes, Complete, where the second-place set, Alan Collection Malaysia's Belize Complete Set Alan, has the Pick# 63a and 63b varieties in PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ and PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ, respectively. It is also part of the Central Bank of Belize, Type Set, 1983-Date, P43-Date, where the second-place set, Alan Collection Malaysia's Central Bank Of Belize QE II Set , uses the same Pick# 63a note as their other set.
