US Civil War Rarities, Certified by PMG, Highlight Stack’s Bowers Sale

Sales of 19th century American banknotes led the way in Stack's Bowers Global Showcase Auction on August 16.

Four 19th century paper money rarities, all certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), each realized more than $100,000 in a recent auction. Sessions 4 and 6 of Stack’s Bowers Galleries' Global Showcase Auction featured hundreds of PMG-certified lots that generated lively bidding on August 14-16, 2024.

The top note in the sessions was an 1863 $50 Interest Bearing Note pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 25 Very Fine (Session 6, lot 21117) that realized $126,000. This non-coupon note replaced a similar design, but it lacked interest-bearing coupons and, instead, it accrued interest for two years before redemption. Only four examples of this catalog number as listed in the PMG Population Report as most of these notes, which represented a considerable amount of purchasing power during the Civil War, were redeemed.

Other PMG-certified notes sold in this auction included:

  • a Salem, New Jersey $100 National Bank Note graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine NET (Session 4, lot 20332), which realized $114,000
  • a July 15th,1865 $50 Interest Bearing Note pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 20 Very Fine (Session 6, lot 21118), which realized $108,000
  • an 1875 $50 Legal Tender pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 20 Very Fine (Session 6, lot 21100), which realized $102,000
  • an 1869 $50 Legal Tender pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (Session 6, lot 21098), which realized $96,000
  • an 1863 $20 Interest Bearing Note pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (Session 6, lot 21116), which realized $84,000
  • an 1869 $20 Legal Tender graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ ★ (Session 6, lot 21090), which realized $72,000
  • an Auburn, Nebraska 1902 $100 National Bank Note graded PMG 25 Very Fine (Session 4, lot 20325), which realized $66,000
  • a 50 Cents Third Issue Fractional Currency Uncut Pair graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated EPQ (Session 4, lot 20103), which realized $52,800
  • an 1874 $50 Legal Tender pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated (Session 6, lot 21099), which realized $50,400
  • an 1878 $50 Legal Tender pedigreed to the Porter Collection and graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (Session 6, lot 21101), which realized $50,400
