Note of the Month: South Sudan 500 Pounds
Posted on 9/24/2024
Country: South Sudan
Catalog Number: 16b
Date: 2020
Denomination: 500 Pounds
Varieties: The PMG Population Report records examples of Pick# 16a, 16b and 16c, which have dates of 2018, 2020 and 2021, respectively. One Replacement/Star note is also recorded.
What makes it special? This note shows the Nile River, the longest river in the world, which bisects South Sudan. The world's newest country, South Sudan achieved independence from its neighbor to the north in 2011.
Did you know? The fourth Sunday in September is World Rivers Day, a time to call attention to the importance of rivers. At a little more than 4,100 miles in the length, the Nile river system edges each of the next three longest river systems: the Amazon in South America, the Yangtze in China and the Mississippi-Missouri in North America, which are each more than 3,900 miles long.
Total graded by PMG: As of mid-September 2024, the PMG Population Report includes 5 examples of Pick# 16a, 13 examples of 16b (including one Replacement/Star) and 11 examples of Pick# 16c.
PMG median grade: PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ for Pick# 16a and PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ for Pick# 16b and 16c.
PMG highest graded: The PMG Population Report lists two examples of Pick# 16b in PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ.
Sales highlights: 500 South Sudan Pounds is equal to about $4 USD. A PMG-certified example of Pick# 16a in the median grade was listed on eBay in September 2024 for $21.99 plus shipping.
PMG Registry: This note is part of the only South Sudan category in the PMG Registry: 2011-Date, Issued Notes, Complete, Including Varieties, where the first-place set, Fadi Dalileh's Bank of South Sudan, 2011-Date, has an example of both Pick# 16a and 16b in PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. The set, which is 96% complete, is a great way to explore South Sudan's currency.
