Collectors can bid on historic US banknotes, including seldom-seen pieces, in Stack’s Bowers Galleries' upcoming showcase.

Collectors are eagerly anticipating a remarkable selection of rare and historic US banknotes, ranging from Colonial paper money to modern issues with errors or fancy serial numbers. A seldom-seen Legal Tender Note is among more than 250 rarities certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ November 2024 Showcase Auction of US Currency on November 22, 2024.

The 1880 $50 Legal Tender graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 7103) has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. This rare note, one of only seven with this catalog number that are available to private collectors, boasts a prestigious provenance, having passed through the collections of Amon Carter Jr. and Frank Levitan. It boasts the second-highest grade of only five examples in the PMG Population Report.

  • an 1891 $20 Silver Certificate graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 7137), with an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000
  • a Confederate States of America 1861 $5 graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 7059), with an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000
  • a 1918 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note (San Francisco) graded PMG 30 Very Fine (lot 7171), with an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000
  • a group of two 2013 $1 Federal Reserve Notes (New York), each graded PMG 30 Very Fine with a Duplicate Serial Number Error (lot 7310), with an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000
