Country: Czechoslovakia

Catalog Number: 10a

Date: 1919

Denomination: 50 Korun

Varieties: None recorded in the PMG Population Report

What makes it special? The back of this note expresses the denomination in six languages: Czech, Slovak, Russian, German, Polish and Hungarian. Dated 1919, it is one of the first notes issued by Czechoslovakia, which was formed on October 28, 1918, from territory that was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The anniversary of this event is marked every October 28 as Independent Czechoslovak State Day.

Did you know? Two decades after its formation, the country was occupied by Germany during World War II. Then, after a brief period of independence after the war, a coup made it a satellite state of the Soviet Union for more than 40 years, until the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1992.
