PMG Registry Featured Set: Belize

Posted on 10/22/2024

With new currency on the way next year, let’s look at the Central American nation’s paper money so far.

This month, as cooler temperatures prevail in many countries around the world, we feature a set with currency that is reflective of its warm, tropical host environment: the sunny destination of Belize.

The Central Bank of Belize recently announced that they will unveil an entirely new series of notes in early 2025. In a statement on September 26, the bank announced these new designs “will tell unique stories of our country’s rich heritage and will incorporate enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting...” In light of this announcement, we feature a comprehensive NGC Registry Belize set by Alan Collection Malaysia, found here.

This collector has assembled a set of lovely notes dating back to the very first issue in 1974. With some lovely PMG Top Pop pieces, such as the 2017 100 Dollar note, graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ, this set has a full gallery of images that should not be missed. The unifying element present in all notes is the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The notes of the 1970s feature a young Elizabeth, while the most recent notes, of course, show a mature QE II.

The early notes also have a simpler design with a few colors and a few elements. The later notes are bursting with colors and many cultural references, including Belizean birds: a toucan, a Jabiru stork, a red-footed booby, a frigate bird and more. Popular buildings are typically featured on the reverse, such as St. John’s Cathedral and the Government House, as shown on the 1996 10 Dollar note, with a Top Pop grade of PMG 67 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ, below.

One may assume that the new notes will feature King Charles III and will be a wonderful addition to this set. Be sure to check out the slideshow for a comprehensive walk through the evolution of Belizean currency.

Alan Collection Malaysia began assembling this impressive collection back in 2016, and his dedication to the series is evident as he continues to make upgrades, including several in October of this year. He currently sits in second place and is not far behind the first place set, owned by dukeleto. This set is the most popular of all sets in the Belize category. With our new annual award deadline of June 1, 2025, there is plenty of time for Alan and everyone else to make improvements to their sets.

Anything can happen before the next annual awards deadline; it is an exciting year for the PMG Registry collecting community.
