MDC Monaco Offers Rare Sarawak Specimen Certified by PMG

The intriguing note is among hundreds of world vintage and ancient notes certified by PMG in the December auction.

A coveted Sarawak rarity leads a group of hundreds of rare world banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) being offered in an upcoming auction. Bidding is already underway for MDC Monaco Banknotes E-Auction 1, which will be held on December 1, 2024.

Among the most exciting notes is a Sarawak 1929 100 Dollars Specimen graded PMG 53 About Uncirculated (lot 794) with a starting price of €35,000 (about $37,000). The note is from Sarawak, an area on the island of Borneo that is now part of Malaysia. It was issued during the reign of Charles Vyner Brooke, the last of the White Rajahs who ruled for a little more than a century. There are only three Specimens of this note recorded in the PMG Population Report, alongside a single Progressive Proof and a single issued note.

  • a Guadeloupe, Banque de la Guadeloupe ND (1920-25) 100 Francs graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 423), with a starting price of €15,000 (about $16,000)
  • an Ethiopia ND (1915-1929) 500 Thalers Specimen graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 196), with a starting price of €8,500 (about $9,000)
  • a Guadeloupe, Banque de la Guadeloupe ND (1934) 500 Francs graded PMG 53 About Uncirculated (lot 427), with a starting price of €7,500 (about $7,900)
  • a French Guiana ND (1938-40) 500 Francs Specimen graded PMG 20 Very Fine (lot 450), with a starting price of €6,500 (about $6,800)
  • an Algeria, Banque de l’Algerie et de la Tunisie 1956 50 Nouveaux Francs on 5,000 Francs graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 80), with a starting price of €6,000 (about $6,300)
  • an Ethiopia, Bank of Abyssinia ND (1915-29) 100 Thalers Specimen graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 195), with a starting price of €6,000 (about $6,300)
  • an Algeria / Allied Occupation in World War II 1944 500 Francs graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 73), with a starting price of €5,000 (about $5,200)
  • a China / Empire 1368-99 1 Kuan - Ming Dynasty graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 130), with a starting price of €5,000 (about $5,200)
