What makes it special? The front of this note shows Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi, an Islamic philosopher so influential that he was regarded as "The Second Master" (with Aristotle being the first). He was known in the West as Alpharabius. The third Thursday in November is recognized as World Philosophy Day; this year it falls on November 21.

Did you know? Al-Farabi (AD 870-950) spent much of his scholarly life in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, where he interacted with Christian philosophers. His exact birthplace is uncertain, but a medieval account puts it in southern Kazakhstan. His contributions to the world are honored throughout Kazakhstan with landmarks that bear his name, including monuments, streets and a large university in Kazakhstan's most populous city.
