PMG Registry Featured Set: States of Guernsey

Posted on 11/19/2024

Let's explore the paper money of this island locale near France before it redesigns its currency.

Artists and collectors alike are excited about a recent announcement from the States of Guernsey, the government of the island locale, which is a self-governed British dependency. As mentioned in various sources, including the Guernsey Press, Guernsey States Treasurer Bethan Haines shared, “It has been some 30 years since our notes were last redesigned and now is the right time to update them.” Now, the call is out to designers there to offer their input for a whole new series of 1, 5, 10 and 20 Pound notes.

In light of this numismatic news, we feature a complete States of Guernsey PMG Registry set, found here.

This PMG Registry set, which is owned by Alan Collection Malaysia, includes many images for these historic notes in his image gallery. The issues prior to 1994 offer ornate penmanship and a range of soft colors. The early Guernsey notes pay tribute to historical characters, scenes of everyday life and references to battles. Alan has many lovely examples, including his 20 Pound note, Pick# 55a, depicting an 1815 scene of Saumarez Park and Admiral Lord de Saumarez. This note is a Top Pop note (with a population of 1), graded PMG 68 Superb Gem Uncirculated EPQ★.

Starting with the 1994 series, there is a new element that dominates this currency; each note features a peaceful, smiling portrait of the beloved Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait is carried through to even the most recent issues. Be sure to check out a lovely piece, Alan’s 2018 Commemorative 20 Pound note, graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ. This multicolor note commemorates the 100th anniversary of “The Great War” of 1914-1918, better known as World War I. The reverse offers a light-hearted portrayal of St. Sampson’s Church, sailboats and flowers.

As the Treasury looks for new and innovative designs, one can wonder what the final designs will be. Will they incorporate a portrait of King Charles III, or will they come forward with a whole new aesthetic? They are also leaning toward the more economically sensible medium of polymer. Whatever the new designs may be, they will have their spots reserved in this complete States of Guernsey PMG Registry set.
