This note is a special currency issued by the Reserve Bank of India to facilitate Indian Muslim pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina for the Hajj. This annual Islamic pilgrimage is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, obligatory for all financially and physically capable Muslims. This note, along with other denominations, was introduced to regulate foreign exchange and prevent Indian rupees from entering international circulation. These notes were eventually phased out as global currency exchange systems evolved.
