African Rarity Leads Hundreds of PMG-certified Notes in Heritage Sale

Posted on 3/25/2025

The German East African note is one of only five examples of that grade in the PMG Population Report, with just one graded higher.

A desirable African banknote certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) is drawing attention in an ongoing Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage’s World Paper Money Signature Auction, which will be held March 27-28, 2025.

The auction includes more than 500 PMG-certified notes, including a German East Africa 1912 500 Rupien graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 24253) that has an estimate of at least $20,000. It is one of only five examples of that grade in the PMG Population Report, with just one graded higher. One of the most desirable of all African banknotes, this high-denomination note was printed in very small numbers, so it is very rare in today’s market.
