Posted on 3/24/2025

This rarity from the Revolutionary War is expected to sell for tens of thousands of dollars in the early April sale.

A rare uncut sheet of Continental Currency is among more than 700 notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) that are being offered in a series of sales presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries. Bidding is already underway for the Spring 2025 Showcase Auction, which includes Session 6: U.S. Currency Part 1: Colonial Notes and Confederate Currency and Session 7: U.S. Currency Part 2: National Bank Notes, which are each being held on April 3, 2025. Bidding is also underway for Session 8: U.S. Currency Part 3: Small Size, Large Size & Error Notes, which is being held on April 4, 2025.

One of the top PMG-graded highlights in the sessions is a Continental Currency February 17, 1776 Sheet ($1 to $8) graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated (Session 6, lot 20130), with an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000. The February 17, 1776, authorization was the first of four that were made during the year in which the United States declared its independence. The sheets that have survived from this particular date are the earliest Continental sheets known to have been issued. This is the only known double pane sheet of non-fractional denominations of this issue, according to the auction house.
