High-denomination Federal Reserve Notes Certified by PMG Highlight Heritage Sale

Posted on 4/21/2025

Five $5,000 Federal Reserve Notes are among a dozen PMG-certified rarities expected to realize six figures in the spring auction.

Several high-denomination Federal Reserve Notes and an exceptionally rare National Bank Note are among more than 1,200 PMG-certified lots being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for the CSNS US Currency Signature Auction, which is being held April 29-May 2, 2025.

Leading the PMG-certified notes in the sale is a 1928 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Boston) graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated (lot 21753), which has an estimate of at least $350,000. It is the finer of the two PMG-certified examples of its catalog number listed in the PMG Population Report. The auction also includes seven other PMG-certified $5,000 and $10,000 notes from the 1928 and 1934 Series, which represent the highest denominations ever printed for Small-Size Federal Reserve Notes, the paper money used widely in everyday transactions today.

Meanwhile, a Cincinnati, Ohio 1875 $100 National Bank Note graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated (lot 20505) has an estimate of at least $125,000. Of the three PMG-certified examples of this particular catalog number in the PMG Population Report, this is the highest-graded example. It was printed by the short-lived Metropolitan National Bank of Cincinnati, which issued First Charter notes during its brief existence from 1881 to 1888.
