Stronger, cleaner, and safer? The Bank of England claims their upcoming polymer notes will be all of this and more. The long-awaited appearance of these polymer notes will launch on September 13, 2016 and will begin with a new 5-pound note.

Featuring Sir Winston Churchill, Parliament, and Big Ben, the new fiver will supposedly withstand circulation for five years, even when suffering from environmental abuse. Mark Carney, governor of Bank of England, recently shared, “It is stronger than paper and can better withstand being repeatedly folded into wallets or scrunched up inside pockets. Polymer notes can survive a splash of Claret, a flick of cigar ash, the nip of a bulldog, and even a spin in the washing machine afterwards to boot.” The polymer material is thin, flexible plastic which is much more durable than paper. These longer lasting notes, when they eventually wear, will be recycled at the end of their life span.
Along with being more durable, the new polymer notes will have increased security features. Some of these features will be:
- A changing hologram with text “Five” and “Pounds.”
- Raised, printed “Bank of England” along the top of the note.
- A translucent window with a color–changing border. It will depict the Queen and a foil tower which is gold on front and silver on the back.
On another note, Carney also emphasizes the series’ commemorative tribute to notable figures in UK history: “By depicting characters on our banknotes, we celebrate those who have advanced British thought, spurred innovation, shown exceptional leadership, shaped this diverse society and forged its common values. In these regards, money is memory for a country and its people. Our banknotes are testaments to the outstanding achievements of the nation’s greatest individuals; they are repositories of the United Kingdom’s collective memory.”
The 10-pound note, scheduled for summer of 2017, will feature the beloved, late author Jane Austen. A few years later, in 2020, the 20-pound note will roll out with English romantic landscape painter, JMW Turner, as the subject. The subject and release date for the 50-pound note has yet to be revealed. The Bank will start pulling the paper notes from circulation as soon as the new fivers begin circulation, but the paper notes will be legal tender until May 2017.
