January Auction to Feature PMG-Graded Notes From the Eldorado Collection

Posted on 12/19/2017

The collection includes many superb Proofs and Specimens.

The Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money to be offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries at the 46th Annual New York International Numismatic Convention at the Grand Hyatt on January 11, 2018, features countless rarities never before cataloged for public sale or certified.

All of the notes have been certified by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG). Many are the first certified or finest graded by the service. These include many superb Proofs and Specimens originally from the Archives of the American Banknote Company sold in November 1990. The Colombian lots in that sale were of such rarity and importance that nearly all of them were obtained for the Eldorado Collection.

A significant number of those key acquisitions are cataloged individually for the first time in this sale. Many of these have been graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ or finer, with numerous types receiving a PMG Superb Gem New 67 EPQ designation.

The Eldorado Collection is sweeping in scope and includes a wide range of types from the earliest 1819 Peter Maverick, New York printed series, 6-1/4 Centavos Pick 1, to modern era Republic of Colombia Proofs from the 1950s. In between are countless different types and issuers. The selection of different private “bancos” from the late 19th century is the broadest ever cataloged individually in any sale. The majority of these private banco notes were printed by the American Banknote Company and are colorful and exquisitely engraved. Included are note types that were reissued during the 1899-1902 “1000 Days War” period; this was a historic event that shaped Colombian history and its paper money issues. Over 600 PMG-certified examples are featured in this auction sale.
