What makes it special? This note commemorates Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee – the 60th anniversary of her ascension the throne in 1952. She is only the second British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee (after Queen Victoria in 1897). More recently, in 2017, she reached a Sapphire Jubilee marking 65 years and making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

The back of the note features four portraits of the queen at various stages in her life. The serial number includes prefix letters TQDJ, which stand for “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee”.

Why is it interesting now? The Queen’s (or King’s) Official Birthday, which falls on the second Saturday in June in the United Kingdom, was first recognized in 1748 under King George II. This year, it fell on June 8, even though Queen Elizabeth's actual date of birth is April 21. The observed day varies throughout the Commonwealth realms, but is generally held in late May or early June so that the weather will be nice for outdoor ceremonies.

Did you know? Many people in Scotland objected to the title “Queen Elizabeth II,” as no Elizabeth I had ever ruled over Scotland. Protests included an unsuccessful legal case challenging the name and widespread vandalism of mailboxes which bore the queen's cipher, “E II R”. As a result, authorities re-branded mailboxes and vehicles with the Crown of Scotland.
