Posted on 7/29/2019
Two rare, PMG-certified American notes are estimated to sell for over $200,000 each in the Stack's Bowers currency auctions being held Aug. 16-18 in Chicago.
The first was issued not long after the Civil War ended: an 1869 $50 "Rainbow" Legal Tender Note graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated EPQ. It features a portrait of Congressman Henry Clay, a former Speaker of the House and Secretary of State.

Issued in several denominations with the year 1869, “Rainbow” Legal Tender Notes like this one are so named for their colorful hues. They are both extremely rare and highly coveted today. The estimate for this note is $200,000 to $300,000.

Graded PMG 25 Very Fine, just 11 examples with this signature combination are known to exist. This note has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.
Both of these rarities were recently graded by PMG after being submitted through its CrossOver service, which was launched in February 2019 after PCGS Currency ceased operations.
