What makes it special? This note is part of the newest series of banknotes issued by Norges Bank starting in 2016. This series depicts various ocean-themed motifs, representing Norway’s close relationship with the sea. For the 50 Kroner note, they chose the image of Utvær Lighthouse in Solund for the obverse design, with an abstract rendering of a light shining through darkness on the reverse of the note.

Why is it interesting now? The United States Congress designated August 7, 1989, as National Lighthouse Day in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Lighthouse Act. Since then, lighthouse organizations throughout America have been celebrating National Lighthouse Day annually on August 7. Moreover, on the third weekend of August every year, the “International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend” and the “International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend” are held simultaneously. These are both international events, and they strive to promote awareness of lighthouses and to encourage the conservation and restoration of these historic and life-saving structures. All in all, August seems to be a very busy month for lighthouses!

Did you know? First established in 1900, Utvær Lighthouse was damaged during an air raid in World War II but survived to be declared a national cultural monument in 1999. Though it is now unmanned and fully automated, guided tours are available for those willing to brave the surrounding waters.
