Why is it interesting now? In the United States, the first Sunday in November marks the end of Daylight Savings. While we were surely happy at the chance to “sleep in” an hour when the clocks turned back that Sunday morning, we also know that this means the days will be getting darker earlier.

These darker evenings also are an unpleasant reminder that the days are slowly but surely getting shorter as winter approaches.

To help ease the transition, November’s Note of the Month is an homage to the slowly disappearing sunlight — decorated in bright yellows and oranges, with the sun shining down on a cheerful field of sunflowers on the back and one large sunflower on the front, it’s easy to forget for a moment that winter is on its way.

Did you know? While many countries observe Daylight Savings Time, the US is one of very few that ends it in November. Most other countries, including the majority of those in Europe, end it on the last weekend in October. The US made the change from late October to early November in part because of persistent pressure from the candy industry, which wanted the darker evenings to start after Halloween — after all, more daylight on October 31 means an extra hour for Trick-or-Treating, which means a larger candy haul!
