Country: Brazil
Catalog Number: Pick# 248a
Date: 2000
Denomination: 10 Reais
Varieties: The Pick# 248b variety has Pedro Álvares Cabral's full name spelled out.
Why is it interesting now? Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral is credited with discovering Brazil on April 22, 1500 and claiming it for Portugal. This note celebrates the 500th anniversary of that discovery. The front of the note features a portrait of Cabral.
Did you know? Cabral claimed Brazil by right of the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas. The treaty divided all newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain along a specified meridian off the west coast of Africa. Cabral named the new land Ilha de Vera Cruz (Island of the True Cross) in honor of a 23-foot long wooden cross that the Portuguese had built and erected there. The land was renamed as Terra de Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross) in Portuguese records. The name eventually transitioned to Terro do Brasil (Land of Brazil), which was more commonly used because of the brazilwood found there.
