PMG-certified US Note Realizes $252,000 at Stack's Bowers Sale

The high-denomination rarity was the top lot at the August 2020 auction.

A $5,000 Federal Reserve Note certified by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) realized over a quarter-million dollars to lead the way at the August 2020 Stack's Bowers US Currency Auction on August 5, 2020. Most of the lots in the sale were PMG-certified, including the top three, which each realized at least $100,000.

The 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Dallas) graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ realized $252,000. US notes with a denomination this high are extremely rare and are fervently sought by elite paper money collectors. This particular 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note is even more special because it is tied with only four others across all districts for the top grade in the PMG Population Report.
