Several PMG-certified US Banknotes Expected to Achieve Six Figures in Heritage FUN Show Sale

Posted on 12/15/2021

High-denomination notes and a Civil War rarity are among the PMG-graded US currency in the January auction.

A trio of rare banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are each predicted to achieve six figures in a sale presented by Heritage Auctions. Nearly 1,000 PMG-graded US banknotes are being offered in the FUN Currency Signature Auction. Online bidding is currently available, with the sale ending January 12-14, 2022, in conjunction with the Orlando FUN show.

The highest denomination

One of the top PMG-certified lots is a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Boston) graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 21176). This note features the 25th Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon Chase, and is the highest numeric value to circulate, generally having been used for transactions between financial institutions. Highly desired among collectors, it has an estimate of at least $200,000.

A rare Hamilton

Another rarity that has an estimate of at least $200,000 is an 1863 $50 Legal Tender graded PMG 58 Choice About Unc EPQ (lot 21064). Showing the first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, and printed with a Red Seal, it is one of only eight known examples. Of those, this is “easily the finest,” according to Heritage Auctions.

Deep from the heart of Texas

Meanwhile, a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Dallas) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 21175) has an estimate of at least $175,000. Featuring the fourth US President James Madison, this particular example has the added attraction of a low serial number. Both this and the $10,000 note are from the BREA Collection.
